Precedence: bulk
just thought i'd throw in my .02 on this years Siggraph...
since it took my brother and I about 4 1/2 hours to get to
L.A. from S.F. bay area, (normally about an hour tops) due to
a variety of transportation hells, i guess i was expecting more :-)
*Autodesk's 3D Studio Max demo was very impressive, esp. the Biped
demo. The interface is very LW, and the features list was impressive.
Personally, the demo reel stuff/images a bit disappointing-although
most were probably done in 3D Studio nonMax :-)
*Softimage was showing off some beautiful particle system stuff, with
some nice user interactive control.
*The coolest thing at the Alias booth was the big lighttable/CRT with
a guy running Alias Paint (?) on it. Alias has also done quite a bit of
interface work since I last played around with it.
*Newtek had a beautiful demo reel running, with Amblin, Foundation, Grid (?)
...but...i was disappointed in the Newtek presence...i wish they could have gotten
some of the HDTV style monitors, or something a little more impressive
to show off. LW 4 looked ok, but compared to all of the other stuff shown,
looked a bit dated, esp. considering the real time wireframe/hidden line/
shaded view modeling/previewing the other packages were showing, taking
advantage of hardware (i.e.GL) graphics power.
*VR was a BIG disappointment IMHO, i thought the tech. had advanced more
than this over the last 3 years. HMD's were still jerky, images still fuzzy,
content still empty :-) maybe next year....
*Game development seems to be on everyone's list, with Sony showing off
some incredible graphics on their Playstation, esp. the fighting game, which
had texture mapping, scaling, transparency, etc..and incredible speed....
which made 3DO's presence seem really sad, as they were running some
depressing game that looked like it was from the C64 days :-)
An interesting day...
